Owen Davey Alumni Magazine
Owen Davey was invited to contribute editorial illustrations for the twice-yearly publication, The Blake School alumni magazine. Based in Minneapolis, Minnesota they selected Owen to illustrate 3 editions of the magazine.
With topics such as the outbreak of the Ebola virus in 2014, transforming communities through Art and how Marcia McNutt is changing the face of science, there was a lot of reference material for Owen to use to generate fantastic imagery.
The published magazines feature stunning cover artwork and several internal spot illustrations with Owen’s charming and informative illustrative approach.
2016 is the Year of the Monkey in the Chinese Zodiac. But perhaps the monkey could use a companion. WildAid is making 2016 the Year of the Elephant - one we'll remember as the year they finally stopped the ivory trade and gave elephants a real chance to recover from poaching.
A collaborative commission between Grey London and Folio saw the intricate crosshatching style of illustrator Olivia Knapp produce a stunningly detailed elephant illustration for use as a promotional piece in the “Year Of The Elephant” WildAid Campaign. WildAid is raising is taking huge steps to make 2016 the year we stop the Ivory Trade!
A challenge for Olivia being this was the first and only elephant she had ever drawn, though even with initial nerves about creating it, she was invigorated by the prominence of this cause. Assigned to draw an entire elephant with an upward facing trunk in a trotting position, Olivia incorporated a ¾ turned head making eye contact and a connection with the viewer. Referencing 4 or 5 stock photos of elephants, she drew a rough sketch with pencil, transferred the sketch onto a piece of Bristol plate paper (100% cotton smooth paper coated with a thin layer of clay) and started cross-hatching with pigment ink using a 0.3 Copic pen. The result is a happy elephant that inspires a sense of optimism.
Olivia is donating the original drawing to WildAid, so they can auction it off at their annual gala.
To celebrate, wish everyone a Happy Year of the Elephant in Chinese!
